CHAPTER 37

“It started a day or two ago.” The guy who’d attacked Carter said, his hands still raised in the air.

“What the hell is ‘it’? We don’t have time for vague bullshit.” Ricky said.

“I don’t really know.” He stammered. “It’s my off-week from work, so I’ve been topside. But I guess...I guess someone found...something down in the mines. Whatever it was infected a dig crew. The whole thing started at the aid station by the main elevator. Security tried to stop them from getting into the main colony, but there wasn’t anything anyone could do!” His voice kicked up in pitch, fear gripping him.

“Hey.” Ricky stepped forward. “Hey!” He snapped his fingers at the guy, whose wide eyes were darting back and forth. He needed to reel the survivor in before he snapped completely. “What’s your name, dude?”

“My...my name?” He asked.

“Yeah, your name.” Ricky nodded.

“David.” He swallowed hard. “David Lyndon.”

“Well, Dave, I’m Ricky.” Ricky put a hand on his vest, then pointed towards Carter. “That’s also Dave. That’s Cameron, and that’s Dean.” Ricky pointed to each of them. David’s eyes lit up at seeing Dean.

“Dean!” Lyndon leaned forward, surprise and relief on his face. “I’m so happy you’re okay, man!”

“Hey, Dave.” Dean said quietly, unable to meet the man’s eyes with Eric’s still-smoking remains just a few feet away.

“Carter, status.” Dominic’s voice came through. Terse. Carter turned his glare away from Lyndon.

“Captain, we…” Carter stopped for a moment, eyes resting on Eric’s supine form. “Be advised. Ricky and I did what we could, but we couldn’t save Eric.” He paused. There was no response. “We found a colonist. Apparently he set the trap that killed Eric for whatever the hell killed all the people here. I’m going to leave Cameron and Dean here with Eric to prep him for movement back to the shuttle while Ricky and I take our survivor and press to the strong point.”

“Copy that.” The captain’s voice came a few seconds later. “Watch yourself down there, Dave.” He didn’t say it, but Carter practically heard the ‘I don’t want to lose anyone else’ the captain omitted from his transmission.

“Check.” Carter said. He turned around to look at Dean and Cameron. “Listen up. You two are going to stay here with Eric and prep him to move to the shuttle, then wait for us till we get back. Whatever you do, don’t touch anything. Especially if it makes noise.” He cast a disdainful glance towards Lyndon.

“Alright.” Cameron said, looking around at the bodies strewn about the large room.

“Here.” Carter drew his spare sidearm and flipped the subcompact pistol around so it was grip-first towards Cameron. “You ever use one before?” Cameron nodded. He’d gone to plenty of shooting ranges on New California thanks to his dad. “This one doesn’t have a safety. Just point and shoot. There’s a round in the chamber, so you’ve got fourteen rounds total. More than enough to put anyone down.” Carter pulled out a spare magazine. “Here’s another thirteen.” He looked at Dean.
